I never understood it, the Blackhawk community in the Army was always telling us to slow down, diagnose, then react, WHICH IS CORRECT for many things, but certain emergencies (fire) you should typically be in a spiralling descent (in order to look for place to land while reducing altitude in case fire destroys critical structure or personnel in back)... an autorotative profile basically and then if you've lost all the altitude possible then level out at 50' AHO and then weigh the risk to continue flying to suitable area or just put it in the trees/water before losing complete control.

If these guys had the old mentality that could explain the unwillingness to commit to LAND IMMEDIATELY. Seen lots of pilots do that in the sim.

Amazing these guys made it out alive. Certainly hand of God and amazing pull of the collective at the last second to cushion just right.
