Well yes they are a waste of resources. damn few places that helitack crews can't reach faster. but.... smoke jumpers consider themselves the seal team of fire fighters and the forest service tradition is to uphold that. McCall Idaho actually has a museum for these heroic creatures. So many FS higher ups come from that job or at least the tradition that jumpers will always have that boys club. |
