Let me explain it to you quickly then, the ear works by picking up vibrations through a membrane, through tiny bones and then those vibrations get translated and interpreted by the brain as sound.

If there are no vibrations, then there is nothing to translate and nothing to damage your hearing.

So if you can't hear anything, there is no magic unknown wavelength to mess up your hearing.

ANR is not perfect and does not really cover the high frequency spectrum. That's why there obviously could be some sound leakage and associated hearing damage. It still works for what it was inteded to, saving your hearing.

The myth was that even though you can't hear anything, your hearing was getting assaulted by an unknown force and you would be receiving a "double exposure" from the sound and the noise cancellation.

Personally, I used CEPs under a helmet that also had ANR, that is about as quiet as it will ever get. The CEPs will make up for the brunt of the reduction, and anything that was leaking through got the ANR treatment in the earcup, with the ANR silencing the low frequency rumble inside the earcup.

ANR is awesome for low frequencies, CEPs for high frequencies.
