I've been hearing whispers of AEL doubling their base pay. While I know this is highly unlikely, the conversation is worth having about the potential impacts on this sector of the industry. The upfront cost would be astronomical but how long long would it take to recover that expenditure when every base they have is completely staffed with pilots and the only reason for missed flights would be weather or MX? I'm sure the operating cost of their fleet is much lower then most. Every other operator in the industry would lose pilots to them and in areas where they have competitors, they would be at a real advantage because those competitor's pilots would be coming aboard and not having to move. It would be a real win/win if AEL had the stones and the bankroll to make the investment. I know that GMR ultimately writes the checks and if it expanded to their whole portfolio, they'd have a stronghold on the industry because nobody else would have a pilot left. Those bases would close and GMR would continue to increase their coverage area. Let's hear your thoughts!

AEL has chosen to do 3 year payout bonuses instead of significantly raising pay.  As a manager and bean counter, I think that was an excellent decision.

It’s a great idea if you’re a corporate bootlicker who would rather have a temporary bonus rather than better base pay that would drive the entire industry to better compensate their employees. But it’s on par with the generation.

Med Trans (another GMR company), is about to lose pilots if they don't open the check book soon. Pilots are not happy with their pay compared to the competition. The three year bonus cannot compete with higher pay at other companies who also has a sign on and longevity bonus. Base pay needs to increase for all pilots, especially IP's and floats. Travel pay needs to be at 1.5 like some of the other companies under the GMR umbrella. Don't get me wrong Med Trans is a great company but management seem to be penny wise and dollar foolish. Little things like paying for pilot boots etc would go a long way. The covid facial hair policy is also in need of an update, at least two guy have left over that.

What is shows is that they have no long term plan or solution....  They are reactionary on a short term basis.  Nothing new for most of the industry has been that way for as long time.

Well, we started to scratch the surface of a constructive conversation before the "bros" started chiming in and hijacked the discussion. I guess we'll continue to cater to the lowest common denominator. We can't expect to be treated, respected, or compensated as professionals when these are the folks that we share the skies with.

Starting pay less than 10 years ago was $68-72K for HAA. It's somewhere in the $80-100K starting range now. The industry is reacting. Have recruiters contacting me every few months... still don't want to go back. Hate nights. Pay still not worth it in my book.

Nights are exactly why I want to get out.

First company that either promises a shift differential or promises I only have to accept scene calls where a helicopter is actually needed. Nights suuuuuuuuck and most of the flights are worthless. Hell I’ll trade a pay raise for an ‘only day shift base’

Yeah, for a season my opposite shift pilot only wanted nights so I'd only have to knock out a currency flight if I didn't already get a early morning or end of shift night flight when on days. Was pretty great.

I love nights now that we have NVG's and AP.  Less volume, peaceful, smoother, stricter wx requirements, and best of all I get enough sleep while on shift so I can get stuff done around the house during the days :-)
