Looks like Mercy Flight already ditching their SPIFR AW119s. 202 hrs. "Sister ships available"  Why so?

My guess is nobody wants to fly a single engine, single pilot, IFR helicopter.

thousands of single engine turbine and piston engine aircraft fly spifr every day, so no, that’s not the reason. if you ever flew the 119, you would know the reason

Thanks, but I’m an A109 Power & AW139 guy.  The Koala is a workhorse though, I’ll give them that.  I’m just not a fan of low inertia rotor systems with only one engine driving them.

They were warned about the lack of support, parts and downtime but decided to go with the sleek cool looking machine.  On paper it looks good, it's fast and cheap as compared to other similar sized aircraft and you get a cabin vs the patient in the cockpit area.  A new H135 is now over 13 million.  They did 4 new aircraft for 21 million, I'm sure it went over a little bit but that vs 52 million for 4 H135s ain't bad.  Not comparing against the 407/AS350/EC130 singles which is more fair in terms of cost but really about the cabin space vs the patient being up into the cockpit area. The 119 gets you a lot of aircraft for a decent price but then you actually have to operate them.  Some people get lucky but lately most people don't and you are stuck.

And yes its nice to cruise at 140kt vs 125kts but over an hour long flight at 140 kts, the slower 125 kt aircraft is going to be there only 7 minutes later.  On shorter flights the difference gets smaller.  I'm sure they also didn't enjoy not having their own stretcher like they had on the BK, now you have to carry the board and gear at scenes or get the gurney from the hospital every time.  Not a big deal if that's all you have ever worked with but going from being self contained in the BK to now not having it I'm sure was annoying.

It's shame, its a great program and now they are going to have to offload them at a loss and try again.

From a maintenance prospective, horribly designed fuel system and an antiquated tail rotor requiring far more maintenance as compared to the as350. Corrosion has to be constantly monitored and treated, especially on rotating components. On the plus side, the well proven PT-6 is hard to find fault with other than it likes fuel.

Amazing to fly, horrible to maintain. Guess who wins. Bean counters and MX dept. call the shots. It's a nightmare to maintain.
