If you want to be home every night. -Yes

If you want that home in a small dump of a town. -No

If you want to get paid to sit around most of the day -Yes

If you want to mess up your sleep schedule and probably hate your life for one week a month- No 

If you want to better understand all the stuff we bìtch about on the forum -Yes

If you agree that an ingrown toenail needs to be transferred by air to a level 1 trauma center at 3:am? Yes!

If you love flying the exact same straight line every day -yes

Pretty hard to argue that analysis.  I could have thought of a few more examples, but that was pretty much spot on.

Pay? OT? Risk vs reward? Maintenance quality?

They start you around 90 then give you location modifiers that will probably be closer to 105-ish. 

OT? You’ll have every manager in the region salivating. Loads of available overtime if you’re willing to travel to the bases, all you want. Industry is hurting.

Risk vs Reward and maintenance really depends on the base and what you’re comfortable doing honestly. Some places in Texas have like 1.5 hour long legs with a 6 hour turnaround. Others do 15 minute hops to the closest city. Sometimes you’ll be bored out of your mind just flying hospital patients for months on end and then you’ll have a scene call at night on an overcast night to a heavy wire environment street with a new hire.

Maintenance too. Hate to say it, but the industry is hurting for mechanics too. Certainly going to be a few lazy mechanics who slip by.

Do they really pay a guy enough to do that single pilot and do two check rides per year? 

SPIFR guys make like 4k more per year before taxes. It’s not a huge pay increase. You also have to accept that if you’re IFR in an area of VFR competitors, -you’re going to be working a lot more often than those people.

spifr, do it. actually makes the job easier. “flying more” in ems is a relative term

How does the job change when you have a baby or kid

You’re working 12 hour shifts but in the summer you should plan on 14. If you go home, you’re too exhausted to spend time with your family or help out much. Plus most start/end time (in my experience) tends around 6/7/8 so you’ll be getting home past bedtime anyway and gone before they wake up. So your spouse will be on their own in a lot of ways for childcare, errands and school pickup/dropoff, dinner etc. Ever heard of AIDS? Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome? 

Of course you also get a week off that you can spoil the hell out of them too so it’s kinda two extremes that you will juggle. Of course there are plenty of other factors that can change that, but as a fellow pilot with young kids, these have been the biggest challenges. 

Just so your kid is not a product of the nurse down the hall, you'll be fine.

I've done flight instruction, ag work, offshore, tours and haa. Will never go back to doing anything besides haa. home every day, varied flying, and will pull 160-170k this year while flying maybe 150hrs total.

How you make that much doing 7/7 schedule EMS 

there’s a lot more to be made if you’re willing to go to the worst bases, fly spifr, do the pool pilot thing or have enough seniority. But I don’t think except in the best case scenarios would you see 150 without a fair amount of overtime

lol people really think its that hard to make 150+ doing ems nowadays? They're throwing money around for minimal work. a single OT shift grosses $1500 currently.
