I’m EMS here small town but not too bad. Everyone is fat and old so probably 90% of my flights are just inter-facility transports for non emergent stuff. About a 30 minute flight one way to the closest Charlie Airspace and an Alert Area between. Sometimes it sucks, I thought I would like the predictably but the 3 hour turnaround time wears me out. What do you guys with suuuuper long legs in the S/SW or those of you with quick hops. 

Just curious what kind of flying you guys are up to.

It all pays the same, but, you can’t beat the adrenaline rush of a scene call.  Do some of that Pilot sh*t Mav.

Increase your vocabulary 

Most are interfacility. Scene calls are murderous rage reservation stabbing and head stomps or the usual alcohol related thing-sometimes both. 

Turn around is no less than 3 hours (1hr each way flying) with 6 hours being common if flying to Phoenix (2 hr leg each way). My base has a revolving door for medical folks and pilots. Darker than I ever care to fly in VFR. Pilots hate it. Med crew deal with it-everyone trying to leave for a better base. One guy (pilot) quit after first hitch.

Worse-the guidance is if you can drop patient within 14 hours do it and fly home part 91 while med crew rents a car to get back. 

Pay sucks. This is how it is out west. Don’t b itch about a 30 min leg.

Northern AZ flying seems like a drag, more weather, longer patient legs. In central az it's short 10-25 minute patient legs, still mostly IFT's. What we gain in morale for shorter patients legs and drives to work we give up in the looming threat that our base will close if our numbers drop, or we lose a hospital contract. Pick your poison. 

Having said that, it's still a good time if you get good crews and some actual leaders at the base to set a standard. It's becoming more and more rare for that to happen though in the age of near constant turnover. 

I’ve heard that it’s really hard to keep pilots in the north east like New York too, anyone know why?
