In the interest of trying to post something Aviation related, this is the best book I’ve read in the last 30 years. It is written by Michael Zhukov. Who is an award-winning writer. The name of the book is “lost in Shangri-La”
Lost in Shangri-La LP : A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the MostIncredible Rescue Mission of World War II(Paperback) - 2011 Edition https://a.co/d/0eZhSFnz
He research the book the Story of a 1945 incident in Papua New Guinea. About a C-47 crash. It is a most incredible read, and would like an absolutely amazing movie. |

The Son Thay prison camp raid in 1970 in Vietnam is absolutely unreal. As complex if not more than the Iran hostage rescue attempt of 1980 (which is also an amazing story) and makes the hype about the recent Iran WSO rescue seem like a joke in terms of complexity. The actual plan was to crash a Jolly Green into a prison compound with enough SF guys in it to carry one prisoner each. They felt the shock effect mattered more than landing outside and blowing a hole in the wall. Turns out a mis-programmed intel photo drone (had no clue we had autonomous drones back then; the book also mentions other crazy technology and missions we had going on back then) made a turn too early that could have let them know the prisoners had been moved. But the operation went on pretty most almost as planned... some amazing flying, planning, and coordination. |
