Easy for me to criticize, does the Navy have a external load school ? I think the CG would be a better NASA asset.

My wife mentioned she thought it looked a little rough. I told her that over water is some of the most difficult circumstances, albeit, they did do it during the day. That said, I also thought it was easy to criticize from the recliner. It didn’t look great. Not sure I’d do any better on national TV.

I too hate to criticize the Navy pilot on that hoist, however I second the suggestion

that the Coast Guard would be a much better choice. Several years ago while working

as an SAR pilot in the west coast, my agency hired a former CG pilot who trained us

in hoisting over water. His goal was to bring our unit skills up the standards  he was used

to in his Coast Guard experience.

He shared the tips and techniques that were developed over decades of hoist work, and

made a fantastic improvement in our performance

.Perhaps someone at the top end of the Navy food chain should look into some similar

training for their folks.

Really, stop and think about it.  Only 50 miles offshore, the Coast Guard would have been the perfect solution.  In addition to conducting a joint exercise and sharing the commitment to bringing the crew back safely, they could have been in the Naval hospital in San Diego in 30 minutes.

Indeed!  The coast guard is the small, professional, nucleus the navy rallies around in times of distress.

Just imagine flying to the moon and back only to be killed by a helicopter pilot. Getting hit in the head with a hoist hook. The problem is; NASA likes Kodak moments. The five minute flight was a good picture drama with all the risk for the camera. A 30 minute flight to shore does make more sense after spending two hours inflating the front porch. Live load certification is lacking everywhere. It doesn't matter if your with a police/rescue unit, or the 160 SO The CG has over-water experience as well as hoist time. The second best option would be a contract production tree operator. Hire a pro with experience. I can just imagine the Navy pilots being picked based on rank, who they knew or family ties.

The first hoist had an aggressive flair that dragged the swimmer into the water and side of the raft. Not sure why they were coming in so fast, same on the other hoists. Looked low to me too, 60s have a lot of downwash.

That would have been a ton of salt spray in the cockpit given how low they were (video of USCG guys are way higher)... is that normal ops to be doors off doing hoists?
