Director of Training Question +3/-4

Does a FAA Part 135 Director of Training require a current FAA medical certificate? If he has had a medical condition that prevents him from preforming his duties as a Airman thus medically grounded from flying can he still preform his duties as a Director of Training ( when that company position required a current medical and able to preform flight duties, ie: was a flying position not a non-rated position ) . If this medical condition is serious enough to prevent him from getting his medical certificate back in the future and is under rehab to preform basic functions, how can he preform the duties of a Director of Training under Part 135 ? |

Is this really a stupid question? I know for a fact there was a 135 operator that had a DO with no valid medical. It was revoked and he used the fact that all his pilots were current CFI to carry out any of his flying and training duties. Don’t know if that actually broke any regs. |

Did you know? If a pilot has a medical condition the prevents getting a medical, some companies will put that pilot in a non flying position to keep them on the payroll. Director of training is not a FAA mandated position and wether or not a medical is required is solely up to the company.

Maybe in the case of the DO not having a medical they met the requirements within the last 6 yrs of becoming a DO (3 yrs experience as a Pilot in Command) unless I read this wrong ?
119.67
) In the case of a person becoming a Director of Operations — (3)(i) For the first time ever, does the individual have at least 3 years experience, within the past 6 years, as pilot in command of a large airplane operated under part 121 or part 135, if the certificate holder operates large airplanes? If the certificate holder uses only small airplanes in its operation, the experience may be obtained in either large or small airplanes.

Only the Chief Pilot needs a medical, and a Third Class is fine to operate under Part 91.
The DOO and DOM do not need a medical certificate. |
