Have wanted to own a helicopter for a long time and im getting close to a point to make this happen. Looking for insight at keeping the helicopter at home.  I know eventually some neighbor will bitch about the sound. What can be done or does anyone have insight to keeping their helicopter at their house.    I live in Florida on a little less then 6 acres. I do NOT live in the city limits.  I have read where you can apply for a private helipad through the FAA but im wondering if anyone has done that.  A local guy Cleetus McFarland lands at his home and i cant find where he has it registered as a pad anywhere. Not sure he will talk to me about his experience with having his ship at his house. Thanks in advance.

Had several customers do this. First thing to check is any zoning or property use limits with your local government. Even in rural areas. Then be a good neighbor and check with them on their thoughts. Offer them free rides on ocassion? If that all works outcheck with the local FSDO if any flight restrictions you'll need in the airspace around your house and any applicale route(s) to/from it.

In the state of Florida, the Department of Transportation regulates, or registers, airport and heliports. Here's the link to get you started  www.floridaprivateairport.com

That's the approval you'll need for the landing surface. But before you can get that approval your local zoning office will have to grant written permission for you to provide to FDOT. Look for airport ordinances in your county. It may be as easy as showing them your plan and receiving a letter of approval. Or it could involve Planning and Zoning noticing all of your neighbors for public hearings, and a few trips to the county commission meetings. But wait there's more! While FDOT regulates the landing surface, the FAA regulates the airspace above it. So, you'll have to have the FAA do a study and provide approval, IF your traffic pattern does not pose a hazard to any visual or instrument approaches in the area. All of the surrounding airport owners have to be noticed in writing and have time to reject as well. And make dang sure you've talked to everyone in the area and explained your plan for usage early on. By all means you don't want them finding out about it via a registered letter from the county. 20 years ago, when I did mine, it took the better part of a year. And the only dissent reply received during either of the public hearings was from the one neighbor I could not get ahold of.

That is a possibility but I am pretty sure that the FD has to be on site for each landing and takeoff..... At least in other states.

In Ca. some counties have specific regulations on landing a helicopter.

Only the feds control airspace but states, counties and cities can all enact rules!

Santa Cruz county in ca. is an example!

There is a house on Lorraine Rd in Bradenton with a hangar. I drive by it all the time an the hangar doors are usually closed but one time I seen a BO105 outside the hangar. The house has a gate by the street and the house is set back so I don't know if you can talk to anybody.

I've got the same question, kind of ...

My house is on the lake.  Lake front.  I've been thinking of getting a HU-16 and wondering who I should check with about it ?

Why is a retired airline pilot (HU-16 guy) getting on a helicopter forum asking for advice?
