He seems to have entered an autorotation, then the overspeed horn sounded, and then he raised collective (just like you pointed out), then Nr decayed quickly (due to it being low inertia blades) and the low Nr horn sounded. At that point, he was very low.

He probably read the same book you did, armchair hero!
