Flew 10 years for one of the largest ENG operators in a 206B. At the time all they operated were B & L models. Our annual 135 checkout was a trip to headquarters and two days with Bell test pilots. ACTUAL Bell test pilots. Ground school was an hour, tops. The rest of the time was beating the ***t out of the helicopter. No phase of flight was off limits. In the HV curve (deep), out of the HV curve, it didn't matter. Throttle chops were un-announced, and you never got it back. Full down, no matter what. Over and over again. I didn't know a helicopter could take that kind of punishment. But it paid off the first time I had an actual engine flame-out (fuel pump drive shaft failure). My only memory is the engine quitting, and pulling pitch at the end. Everything else was pure muscle memory from all of that training. So smooth (if I do say so myself), the "talent" asked, "why did we just land"? Sadly, I don't think many operators, of any kind, do that kind of training any longer. :( |
