Thousands of hours ago, I was in a bad spot when an engine quit at one of the absolute worst possible times. Luckily I was light with only one passenger at the time when it happened. I correctly entered the auto but had no forward speed for a real flare. The ground was coming up quick. I caught myself mid pull trying to slow the closure rate down with the collective. I mentally said, possibly even out loud, Ah sh#%, don’t f’ing do that, and slammed the collect all the way down where it should have been. I waited until the last possible tenth of a second before impact and almost ripped the collective through the upper stop. Somehow the machine stopped descending and settled down gently. We were safe. After going through that, and watching this video, I can see exactly how the pull and flare happened way too early. |
