30 years in and I regularly join the airplane pattern. Why? Everyone knows the pattern,  tower controllers usually appreciate me not messing with the flow. Most helicopters are as fast as the light airplanes and often small airports have noise routes so why not? Because the FAR/AIM say SHOULD avoid the flow of fixed wing? Ya maybe when I was chugging around in a B-47.
