I remember watching Neil & Buzz in 1969 land on the moon on our black and white 18" Admiral TV. Neil hand flew it after the guidance computer was overloaded.  Those were the real guys doing test pilot stuff back then. 

I cannot figure out why the plan wasn't to land.  We have the technology and skills from previous Apollo missions.  Heck, if all they were doing was taking photos of potential landing sites, why not send an unmanned photo and sensor array.  A lot cheaper and just as effective.

They could have tested the launch vehicle and duration and system check on the Orion in earth orbit.

We flew into moon orbit in 1968 with Apollo 8.

I loved the space program all my life until the Obama administration re-designated it an outreach program.

Now, I sticking with Musk.
