5 aircraft lost, 11 crew killed, and 6 more aircraft severely damaged just to try to rescue Bat 21.

In the end, a sincle crazy Navy Seal lieutenant (O-3) snuck behind enemy lines, helped carry him to a river, and floated him downriver to safety.

The book does blow away the movie (which was good but missed so many amazing details).
