commercial jets have been flying and landing themselves since the late 80s. Still two pilots there. The tech is great and I do hope it continues to advance, in hopes that it makes into every cockpit flying today. SAS and AutoPilot systems are the minimum of what should be in every single Comml aircraft flying. Sadly though the operators suck and are too cheap at the moment. But I dont think the day is too far off where regulators are going to be able to ignore any longer the need to mandate minimum standards to at least the Pt. 135 operators. The Bell 407GX and EC130T2 cockpits or similar are a bare minimum of what should be implemented. Anything less today is suspect and negligible frankly. But, not in our lifetime will we ever see a helicopter flying over populated areas and doing what EMS and LE does. Maybe in military applications and much of production (survey, ENG, AG, forestry etc) there is certainly a use. But never would the public today be OK with it, and yes not a single clinician would climb aboard without a pilot. No way. |
