I'm old school, too.  However, the auto-flight systems are to decrease the workload of the pilot so he or she can adequately develop and comprehend dynamic SA and ADM.  Workload or "Task Saturation" is a primary human factor in aircraft mishaps.

Even with auto-flight, most corporate flight departments and all 121 operators have two pilots.  The HAA sector only has one.  The auto-flight system is the second pilot.
