A friend of mine who bought a one bedroom apartment during the last market crash lives off of his military pension of 100% disability. With his mortgage paid off his annual costs are about $35K from his building. No car required and plenty of entertainment and food options within a 15 minute walk of his abode. He lives comfortably on $80K a year which is tax free.
