When you first start out having a thin sole flat shoe will help you get a feel for the pedals, especially on a small training aircraft like the R22. When you are a low time student any changes can throw you off your game so if you want to stick with the same pair for a bit then go for it. First time you get in there with a pair of big winter boats it's going to feel weird but don't worry about it. Eventually none of it will matter and you'll laugh about how shoes got involved with your performance.
