You don't have to know anyone, but you do have to know how the VA system works.  There are plenty of YouTube channels if you'd like to educate yourself and do it alone.  The other option is paying someone for their expertise.  You don't pay unless they get you benefits, and only have to pay them when you get your back pay lump sum.  There are many options there too.  All you have to do is a google search.
