We had a Pilot at our Base use it when his A1C was too high and he couldn't get his medical , he was off for about 2 months and got about 60% of his regular pay. But he had to use all of his PTO and vacation time before it would kick in , which meant he only got 2 paychecks with use of short term , better than nothing I guess.
