It has always been more of a High School type of popularity contest.  Until the operators actually exercise real operational control, it will continue to be this way.

Imagine if the airlines were to allow the same treatment from the cabin crew.  There would be no pilots left.

Smile, nod, agree, laugh at their jokes and don't F up too badly & one can have a long career in HAA.

If you are one of the "golden child" pilots, you can get away with just about anything.
