Having had to autorotate twice I can assure you there will be no notice, there will be a conscious denial that you are in the situation (at least there was in both instances for me), an immediate need to maintain and optimize Rrpm and glide path to whatever becomes your touchdown point, and an absolute need to fly the machine any way necessary to survive.
Don't forget the backup auto, but not so fast the horizontal stabilizer setup works against maintaining a relatively flat attitude, and, start your forward movement recovery by 500 - 700' AGL.
If your AUW is notable do not expect your rotor rpm will extinguish all your ROD - you'll need some flare effect and hopefully some ground slide area in front of the machine.
