Also, Coast Guard officers are legally eligible to be appointed as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pursuant to 10 U.S.C. § 152(a)(1) and 10 U.S.C. § 154(a)(1), although none have as of yet (unlikely I would think). So considered armed forces.
