Here's my experience from a couple of years ago. At morning shift change the managers (Area, RAM, RAD) showed up and informed the outgoing/ incoming crews that the base was being shut down immediately. They then called as many off duty crews as the could for a conference call. Informed them. Told everyone they were off for the next two weeks with pay. Gave everyone a list of open positions nationwide. Told us to pick something in the next two weeks. If after two weeks if you hadn't selected a new position you were let go.  Everyone gathered their stuff and went home. A relief pilot came in a couple of days later and flew the aircraft away. Only about half of all the med crews/pilots from the base remained with AMC.
