To most a&p mechanics that actually care about the aircraft, have a good work ethic, and take pride in their work, washing is preventative maintenance. There doesn’t need to be a FAR to say it, but for those that need guidance—washing, waxing & polishing are preventive maintenance items listed under FAR part 43, appendix A, section C, paragraphs 9 & 10, and also under FAR 1.1

Cleaning the aircraft is also in the maintenance manual. 

Personally it doesn’t bother me. If someone pays me 100k a year to wash a helicopter, I’ll smile doing it as an expensive expensive helicopter washer.
