I previously worked a community base for over a year and have been a Regional Relief pilot for the last couple of years.  Pros and cons for both positions.  Which one is safer?  There is no definitive answer to that.  That depends on the pilot, not the position.  One does have to research the base they are covering if they have never worked there.  If you don't, then you can set yourself up for failure on the first call.  However, I have seen some scary base pilots who have been at their base for years.  It truly is how you approach your job.
