JW was happy to portray the war hero as long as he was far from the danger. Clark Gable, 6 years older. Flew numerous combat missions in B-17. Henry Fonda, 2 years older. Fought in the Pacific. Jimmy Stewart, 1 year younger, commander of a B-24 squadron with 20 combat missions and remained in the reservs, retiring as a BG.  Others in their mid thirties who fought in other conflicts. It's fine if an actor wants to hide from the fight, just don't present yourself as some kind of All-American Hero.
