 Media writers aren't really journalist so if they need some thin stats to write some crap they can find it. I'd guess many other less higher profile jobs have more deaths.  Roofers, highway workers, linemen, farming types

 But maybe the high EMS rate also includes death-by-nurse. You know the thousands of people killed by incompetent medicals.
