was setting to give up after their losses in TET '68 but the public outcry in the states convinced them all they had to do was lay low, requip and reman, and eventually the US would go away - absolute fact.  If the politicians in DC weren't so afraid China or Russia would get involved (like during the Korean War) things would have gone differently evidenced by the Christmas bombing of '72 success in bringing NV back to the peace talks which successfully concluded American ground involvement.  

There's a lot of misunderstanding as to American military service successes and otherwise in that war, and even more unknowns in previous wars not presented by American media via the nightly news.  Just think of our media today and what they were like back then.  There wasn't a huge difference!  They were almost absent in Korea and far less so in WWII.  

The big deal is there are no winners in war, and the sides are almost exclusively manned by allied nations, "win or lose", as scripted by the events and media and sucked up by innocent readers.

Given any conflict if you weren't there, you haven't a clue about the real results.
