An ELVA works ok until you have zero comms and maybe even the ship DIW with significantly reduced vis.  Having an alternate when either ELVA didn't work sure is better than planned ditch.  Nothing unsafe or idiot about it.  You've got a radar or maybe even just data link, use it.  Especially if your familiar with an OD-58 or FPN-63.
