Sgt Pittman received the Medal of Honor for Heroism in Vietnam.  He was blind in one eye since childhood.  After being rejected for service twice, he tried again.  When it was time to read the eye chart he covered his bad eye and read the chart.  When told to read the chart with his other eye, he switched hands, covered the same eye and passed.  He did this when needed for almost 3 years.  Finally, after returning from Vietnam, he was caught and promptly discharged.  He later requested to enlist again, was approved due to his record in Vietnam and served until 1988, retiring as a Master Sergeant.
