Of course it is good for their show business careers.  You can't buy this kind of publicity.  They blew the little dust-up in the Ukraine OFF the front page. 

They have the attention of the entire world.

The viewership for next year's Oscars will double.

The reason people cling to the belief that it was "real" is because they WANT it to be true.  And, of course, they feel like idiots for believing it in the first place.  All you really need to know:  Nothing is ever on TV by accident.

Watch it 5 or 6 more times.  You'll see that it is totally fake, no better than a fake fight from an old western.
