They usually happen as a matter of demographic supply and demand exacerbated by factors such as what you mention, an economy troubled by the recklessness of the CCP government on the wrong tracks which provides a pandemic poorly handled by them and other governments which brought about many early retirements.  Can't blame airline pilots sick of decade upon decade of tarmac maneuvers.  Drive ya nuts!
