Yes, the fire guy is exactly right. Many have relocated only to have a base closed. I know of two within the last three years. Moving your family may not be fiscally smart, but it does help to keep some happier than the whole commute and be gone for a week (or two) thing. In that case, it's just a cost of doing the job and keeping the family together.

As for me, I subscribe to the "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" theory, which is not neccesarily how it works. More like "get outta my face and I can tolerate you easier"...
