Just got the AOPA mailer for membership. As a HAA pilot who does not fly outside of my job, is there any advantage to being a member of AOPA as a helicopter pilot?

They can help with FAA issues (medical).

Well, asking helicopter pilots on a helicopter forum is my research.

If you don't have something positive to say, why bother?

Actual examples of situations where AOPA membership paid off for a HAA pilot is what I am after.

Thanks in advance for answers.

Look at the thread, some say it's great...some say it sucks.  Now you can go to the site, research the benefits and see if it's worthwhile for you.

See how that works?

Yes! The lawyer and loss of medical benefits are well worth it. In my opinion.

I'd add the medical help service to that as well.  They were a tremendous asset when I ran into a medical issue some years ago.  I've never used the legal service, but know pilots who said they too were invaluable.  I continue to be a member and continue to subscribe to their legal and medical services.  In the grand scheme of things, it's not really a lot of money, especially compared to other types of insurances, and, IMHO, a good idea for professional pilots.

I don't see when a helicopter pilot would join an airplane organization. To the guy who has been a member since 1977, what have they done for you? Is there an equivelant helicopter organization?

AOPA does both helicopters and airplanes, and most all subjects related to Aviaton.

The do commentary on all aircraft to include safety and instrument tips, technology, Test Pilot, Fly-In events, aviation history, medical (AME) information, Lawer assistance against the FAA, and my favorite "Never Again" stories about pilots admitting to screwing up big time and still alive to share their experience.

Blows, there isn’t a equivalent helicopter organization, as this one, also, blows.

sure is to include legal help if you subscribe and help with FAA medical problems.  AOPA is not a joke, at all.

I've been a member since I started flying in 1978.  AOPA offers a lot of services, to include legal for certificate action and the such.  For me, it's worth their ATP legal plan for $100.00/annually.

Also, I always renew my instructor certificate with the FIRC.  It is true that their FIRC is centric on FW, but most of the information is generic to the CFI, regardless of category.  I'm dual qualified, so for me,  it's a good refresher on the FW stuff, as well.

AOPA has an ample amount of safety and training material for all levels and it is current and informative.

Flight planning services, life insurance, certificate insurance all seem to be pretty good and I love their monthly magazine...For me, it has always been worth the money...

Agreed!  I've been a member for decades and have used their medical certification service for a couple of issues.  They knew the drill and walked me right through the FAA BS.  I've never used the legak service, but know some folks who have.  They seemed satisifed with their service too.

The bottom line is that, at least for me, if you're a professional pilot, their services are well worth the price of admission, even if you have to pay for a membership too.  Also, the cost, especially compared to other types of insurances, is quite reasonable.

And yes, I love their AOPA magazine...I choose not to live my life vicariously through a cell phone.

Also, in this day and age, I realize there are those of whom struggle with the fundamentals of 8th grade reading and comprehension...You know, understanding the breadth of context and the varying viewpoints of an actual author...
