Msg ID: 2815063 Question for the mechanics +5/-2

So a while back some of you were saying that a lot of mechanics have jumped ship and moved into other industries such as oil and gas, etc.

Well after 29 years I'm starting to think I'm done with aviation. Had some good times. Done a bit of everything 133, 141, 135, fixed wing, corporate, HAA. Didn't mind the field work, seems they're slowly coming around pay and schedule wise. HAA wasn't too bad but things can change pretty quick.

I've seen pilot pay, incentives and schedules just getting better and mechanics' pretty much stays the same. Chatted with a DOM from a big corporation recently who said it's getting harder and harder to find mechanics and really hard to find goood ones. Kind of feels like that old saying about two ships that pass in the night. To quote Mr Chow - "Not my problem!"

Anyway, anyone have any suggestions on where look to get the resume in front of folks who make those decisions and find contacts outside the industry?

you don't say what you're doing now but it must be one of the many "admin" jobs on indeed that pay you 100k plus a year and you don't need any experience

There are quite a few non-aviation companies that hire A&Ps for their skill sets to include purposely hiring them straight from A&P school. Best route Ive seen done is decide what you want to do, where you want to live, and set your resume up specifically to that job. Good luck.

Go into energy. Combustion turbine gas plant operators need guys like you bad, especially when you figure in the ultimate demise of coal.

Where do you find those unicorn yacht A&P positions, they are few and far between on Helijobs?

I'm retired and have to say I enjoyed my career but I wouldn't do again with the BS that comes with the job in today's world.

The Delta Techops, United Techops, and the like will snap you up and pay you very well IN A HEARTBEAT with your experience. I used to fly EMS and got an office job at a smaller component mx company that serves the airlines and get paid better than I was as a pilot (and don't have to deal with night shift or nurse drama). From what I've seen we hire young kids here, straight out of tech school at around $20/hr and they jump to the big tech ops up the road at $50/hr in 3-5 yrs. They don't even have an A&P. MAYBE they have a Repairman certificate. No telling what a guy like you would get but if you're willing to move to one of the bigger cities where the airline mx is done (or engine shops, etc.) you could probably do very well.

Just FYI the employee that has a repairman certificate does not keep it if they leave the company that issued it to them.

Ah... forgot. That's right. Blows my mind how a repair facility only technically needs 1 A&P in the bldg so long as they have an FAA approved training program for their techs. Or something like that

I agree, how can a repar station bring people in off the street essentially and in short order they are working on aircraft, just mind boggling.
