oil and gas is still pretty good I bet. air med has probably never had much of a reputation. you need to look up the meaning of engineer. aircraft mechanics are not engineers and engineers are not mechanics |

I was referring to reference not practicality . It was back when there was a small bit of respect in the industry! If you don't know what that is , you can look it up. Its in the Dictionary ! |

Hangar floor 2000-2010 I had more systems knowledge than most of the morons in the quote "engineering" department.
Most of those guys in there did not even hold a degree. I at least held an Associates of Avionics technology issued from the AF while I was part of the CCAF program the 7 years I was in.
Many times they took a kid taking classes at UL who barely graduated HS and stuck him in the engineering department because he was Boudreaux's cousin, and left the ones who could actually troubleshoot....like me, on the floor to keep things fixed and running smoothly.
I recall several times the "apprentice engineer" would scurry out to the 92 while I was running wire with a new revision of the print I was running wires against and I'd send him right back in there to make more changes because he wanted a wire terminated at a point 400 inches away at a pot when I already terminated that very same wire at the same point electrically at the balance box where the wire he wanted spliced was already routed to in the first place by Sikorsky, mere inches away from the lighted sugar cube he was trying to get power to. I'm like duh bro, come on man. Have you ever even worked on a 92? And I already knew the answer the that question...was no.
SO, yeah....the brits and canucks have it spot on to call us ground pounders engineers.
I had to engineer all the items on the station 300 shelf on our 76's because even the Director of Avionics was at a loss on how to cram all the crap he wanted in the aircraft without moving everything around that the aircraft already came wired with. Saved myself a ton of work that day..... Shame when the new hire avionics guy has more brain cells to rub together than the engineering department and DOA combined...... |

you're not an engineer. engineers go to engineering school and become engineers. you went to trade school to work on what engineers designed. this is not complicated. |

apprentice program came out of necessity as the numbers of a&p schools are dropping or going to the airlines. but its nothing new since phi "grew" their own mechanics back in the 70s and 80s as most a&ps left after 6 months back then. |

horse hockey. the only shortage of mechanics, is a shortage of mechanics willing to work for the carp wages they want to pay. |

and started as a helper then went to the hangar... then repairman... then got my a&p via frank dearman and cyril. and so did about 50+ people i knew. however, you'll find a number of larger companies are implementing an apprentice program as well for the same reasons as phi and its not because of mx costs |
