Prepare yourselves fellow JH'ers....serious question ahead... 

Our outfit is finally transitioning to EFB. We have iPad mounts installed and are starting to fly with them. However; we have not nailed down where they will be located prior to a flight. Do you all leave them in the aircraft? In a fixed location plugged in? Somewhere quick to grab on the way out the door?

We experience 4 seasons from freezing cold like a witch's t!*ty in a brass bra doing pushups in the snow to blazing hot like 2 mice f*@king in a wool sock during summer here and aitcraft are supposed to be outside when weather is flyable (meaning iPads could / would be in aircraft if that's the decision)

What say you all? 

keep them inside charging on a shelf right next to the aircraft logbook.  

I like to keep everything in the aircraft after preflight: goggles, logbook, helmet and spare ipad that's fully charged. When a flight comes in, all I have to do it grab the ipad and go. I tend to not forget anything that way and I don't like having to carry a bunch of stuff to the aircraft before a flight. 

Always insure your EFB is secure and doesn't fall and get stuck between the anti-torque pedals, it can result in a fatal accident.    

How much do you "insure" them for? $

You didnt mention how the aircraft was being stored outside.  With airconditioning, visors, location from office space... I'm not a big fan of putting on a heat soaked helmet during the summer months or trying to defrost the ear cups and head liner in the winter.  Leaving your iPad/phone in areas where the temp goes way up such as a clsoed cockpit, you may run into delays as the unit returns to operating temps before allowing power up.  Batteries as well as electronics as a whole don't really react well to extreme temp changes.

Get a lobook cover with a side pocket to hold the primary i-pad and take it inside with you for charging, weather checks, W+B updates etc. The secondry i-pad stays plugged in in our aircraft and have suffered no ill effects.

... you are carrying all the same things.

If you leave something, like the logbook, or EFB, or helmet, inevidably you will find yourself sitting in in the acft ready to start with something missing, or taking off with something missing.   Better to have a flow...   ALWAYS carry out these things so you don't inadvertantly leave them behind, or have someone take them from your cockpit withtout your knowledge (like the logbook)

It's good to get a little representative cross section of what a few others are doing.

If you forget something you will have forgotten something? Maybe. 

I could not figure out why I had no comms after take off. after 15 minutes I realized I forgot my helmet. 

if you forgot something, it is "enevidable" you will have left something behind and find yourself sitting in the aircraft without it. I can't argue.
