If your helicopter is at a hangar, and the hangars across from yours are more than 150 ft away, so the ramp inbetween the 2 rows of hangars is huge - do you feel it's necessary to have to wheel your helicopter all the way past the end of the row of hangars to start up/lift/hover?  Or are you just fine, if all the hangar's doors are closed, to just lift/hover from in front of your hangar ?

A few things in this industry have annoyed me, one being like a (lead) pilot who decides this is not acceptable without them having any good reason to back it up and therefore creates a uniform rule for all the pilots to follow, and if ya don't then you'll get written up.

But there's too many examples like this in our industry.  Examples of things of someone (management or lead) who decides 1 particular thing is not ok to do in "this job", even when that same thing is done in nearly every other job or part of our industry.   It's ridiculous how 1 particular thing is done on a daily bases in many parts of our industry, but definitely not allowed in other parts because those making that decision don't have a broad enough experience in other parts of the indusrty to understand that.

All depends on local procedures. Plus, a lot of light F/W owners do not want a helicopter flying in vicinity of their pride and joy.

Wheels are great when you need them but they do require multiple people and can be a PITA.

1. Safety first.  Did you check all the doors including the walk through doors and ensure they are all properly secured?  Of course size of helo needs to be considered.  If the doors are closed and no FOD to cause damage then refer to step 2.

2. Any legal objections? Does the airport have any restrictions/policies?  If not, refer to step 3.

3.  What does your boss say?  If there is no set policy, perhaps a discussion is in order.  150' is pretty wide however, some hangars and wall panels may be hanging by the their own rust from so the undue stress may not be the best thing for them.  If he does object why not listen to there side.  It may be a PITA to move, but any delay is now caused by them.  Perhaps a lift cart is in order.  At least that enables you to reduce the evolution to a one man job and satisfies both parties while enforcing rule 1.

Why are you hover taxiing between them? Go vertical unless you're in an underpowered pos. Everyone hates the guy slowly hover taxiing around for no reason. get up and get out while being as neighborly as possible.

may be understanding the inevitable imbalance of rotor inflow off the corresponding walls and its impact on differential lift.

If you really want to test this just hover as close to a high concrete wall as possible and see what happens when the inflow on that wall side gets reduced and the helicopter quickly drifts into it.

Ouch.  Seen it.
