How high do you guys cruise? My limit is around 3,000ft agl. Above that there is little apparent speed over the ground. |

Weather permitting I try to stay above 3000 feet in my helicopter all the time. The FAA says 95% of all Burge drugs happen at 2500 feet AGL and below so if I stay above 3000 feet I just eliminated 95% chance of hitting a bird. |

Not sure why you need any "apparent speed over ground". I'll fly as high as deemed necessary for the conditions. Sometimes there is less headwind super high, or even a switch to tailwind. You'll always get better fuel economy as you go up. More time/distance/choices if the engine takes a dump. I guess it could be argued that a fire in flight would be worse, but that's about all I might worry more about. I'll cruise 8000' AGL all day if there is a reason for it. |

I once claimed to 11,000 feet because reported winds ended up giving me 205 kts over the ground on a 600 nm repositioning flight, totally worth it.
trouble is given the possibility of any emergency it's a very long 10-15 minutes back to the surface... above 3k your bird strike risk is markedly reduced. flying in mountains... generally add 2k feet above highest elevations to avoid majo of mechanical turbulence. when in doubt asses risks and Benifits and chose then evaluate... when in doubt just don't fly! |

Wow. I guess the spirit of the helicotper is dormant in today's pilots. Why fly a helicopter above 1,000 agl unless you are inadvertent IMC?
Must be airplane rated folks. Get a clue |

I flew my whole career at 500'. Sometimes a little higher. 10,000 + hrs. Whats your point? |
