You're not making the point you think we are because we simply are flying more.

Damn near anyone can get a certificate not many choose to be true aviators. Lots of what was pounded into me over 30 years ago was information rarely needed but has on occasion saved my life.

Apache crash has strong probability of hot-dogging by 2 senior aviators. Not sure about Apache one in Utah. The one at Novosel last year was mechanical. The various Army mid-air were poor discipline as those who have flown military formations know what it takes to do that. Chalk 2 on the controls (plus a crew chief discipline to be alert) never takes eyes off chalk 1. I want to say most of the pilots were younger. Sea Stallion was young guys making poor weather decision (whether due to cockiness or command influence doesn't matter, they probably should have landed when it got bad). Osprey crashes have been all mechanical and are normal if you look at history of mechanical failure of semi-newly fielded militsry aircraft over the years... especially complex ones with some new feature or technology. Bizjet dual engine failure and crash on the hwy was purely mechanical. Have there been a ton more? Small GA planes have engine failures almost every month and probably always will... hard to blame piloting skill on those.

Power drift off the runway onto the taxiway in the grass yesterday....

Easy enough to deduce they hit the wet runway ran out of length and instead of keepin her straight and going off the overrun....try to drift onto the taxiway like a super cool ricer on tokyo drift.....and well you can see how that worked out.

I was on a flight that landed in Durango CO. 737.....they did the exact same thing because the runway had about a foot of snow....I felt the plane drift after landing and slowing that took forever....looked out the window as I was seated near the main wing and could see the perimeter fence.......the wing was more than half way over the top of the fence.  I was like what the f.....so I guess that just happened.   YES it happens.

THey slid that baby sideways right at the end of the runway.  Some times it works....some times you make the news.

You see, the greatest generation didn't happen by accident.

All these awesome Sully Sullenbergers didn't just come out of no where.  THey were honed, shaped, culled from the masses.

War.

War was the great filter.

World war 2, the korean, vietnam....storms in the desert.  They are all good for one thing.  Culling the weak and letting the strong survive.

See, this is where all the great pilots of yesterday came from...the crucible that forged great pilots.

Today we have a plethora of average pilots who are just that, average.  No challenge beset in front of them to weed out the chaff.  Hence the increase in dumb pilot stuff you see on the daily.

We need a good war to pit the mediocracy against mediocracy so that the best of the best can once again emerge.

Then we'll have great pilots back in the cockpits again.....and less runway incursions and excursions, midairs, and what not.

we need a good war so the bad pilots get killed and the good ones don't and then less planes going off the runway

In the war on terror not even 20% of heli crashes were from enemy fire, it was all IIMC and CFIT. With all of that time to hone the skill and they still killed themselves most of the time. I can only imagine how badly most of the high school drop outs they were slapping into cockpits actually flew during Nam to manage to ball up 5,600 helicopters.
