Russel was actually flying at 1200' AGL, not 500 as some have wrongfully said.

that information is on page 3 of the report. They were reported 47 miles from the airport, and it gives the direction from same, at 4000 feet MSL. You would have to look at the map at that position and get the ground elevation to see how high they were above the surface. So, there is your answer.
