I've heard that now from multiple people and then the safety alerts that got sent out to us about bird strike mitigation along with the aerial shots, adsb data etc are all point towards hitting multiple geese. From there its just an order what failed in what order, none of it really matters sadly. Options are...
1. Birds came through rotor system causing damage to mast/pitch links/blades that caused the damage leading to rotorhead separation
2. Birds through cockpit causing pilots arm to pull back on stick and then forward leading to a mast bump, more than likely involuntary movements by pilot at the point
3. Pilot actually saw the birds in last moment and attempted a pushover causing mast bump but still hit the birds anyway so result would have been the same just the wreckage may have looked different.
These were Van Horn composite blades so if they find parts of blades further back from the two known main parts of the wreckage which are the fuseluge and then about 300' the rotor head then we might figure more towards losing parts of the blades on initial impact with the birds. Either way hitting even 1 goose at speed can be catastrophic, hitting a flock is terrifying. As I explain to my non aviation friends, picture the heaviest 12-14 pound bowling ball, pick it up and fire it at 115 mph at your head or aircraft and in these case maybe 5 at the same time. |

if you didn't see any evidence in the overhead shot, there couldn't have possibly been a bird strike.

Exactly, you are not going to see anything from the small images and short clips that made it to the news. Even on accidents that were determined to be from bird strikes / geese where there were higher detailed shots taken from the ground you dont see the birds. They end up turning into goo and get smeered into the deeper parts of the cabin and only having feet on the ground and walking around and looking into the cabin areas do you start to see the evidence. Especially on a case like this where the ground impact caused so much destruction to the cabin its hard to even pick out large parts of the aircraft.
Below are from a fatal AMC 407 accident from geese hit the aircraft and windshield. Even here you wont see them, let alone from a news helicopter circling above that purposely was not zooming in as tight as they could due to unfortunate reasons.

The pictures of the 407 were merely used as a reference that you are not going to see bird remains from aerial shots from a news copter vs having boots on the ground and still having a hard time seeing them. No reference made to mast bumping in that post, that was a case of pilot incapacitation. |

Lost a S76 because they cheaped out on R&R Glass windshield W/plastic. Birds came through on T/O knocked bothe throttles to idle, all on board parished. RIP. |

Was working in Houma that day. Very sad day and forced cheap operators that were saving money and a few extra pounds by using plastic widscreens instead of glass. |
