HAA Pilots today would be crying in the corner if they had to take a flight like we did 20 years ago in this industry. They cry an dbarely hack it today and its the safest and easiest flying it has ever been, and only getting easier. 

1) Automation. Autopilots and Stabilization. The machine flys you.

2) GPS. Outside the traffic pattern or your tour route you would be lost without it. We used to only have TDH.

3) NVG's. Try doing this in zero illumination, searchight (nightsun if lucky) in marginal weather, mountainous terrain....You only see that on youtube and Call of Duty.

4) Advanced Weather Reporting. We used to lift and check weather.

5) OCC to check on you and follow your every move

6) "Pre-designated" LZ's everywhere. 

This generatin is spoiled and has everything they need to be safe while their workload is 10x less than it was. There is no reason to be paid as much as we are in this industry. We deserve LESS because we are doing LESS!

when automobiles had barley lit incandescent head lights/ No hi beams/fog/driving lights, drum rear only brakes, no rack & pinion steering, no front shocks/struts or rear coil overs, No defroster/A/C/power brakes/power steering/power windows, heated/power seats & steering wheel, NO turn signals/4 way flashers, no rear view mirrors on either door! Oh the horror. How did ANYONE drive & survive 🤔🤷‍♂️🤪

Ive been flying HAA since 2006 and am more than happy to have all

the help we have now. I've seen most of the things you mention and some you didn't; HTAWS, NVG's, single engine automation, TCAS, foreflight, satelite tracking, OCC's etc etc come to be the norm. Unfortunately we are really good at crashing aircraft and all this has largely come about as a result of those tragedies. 

Could I and did I do the job safely without it all? Sure! However, I'm more than happy to have the help. It's working smarter not harder. YMMV.

Single pilot VFR had IIMC. Flew the NDB approach back to the airport. Single needle ADF with DME and no autopilot. I had to change the flight suit after that one. Med crew treated me like a God for a few weeks after that :-)

Even with all this automation and safety features the ambulance drivers of the air still manage to crash all the time. Maybe pilots just lack overall skill? Or penciled whipped their time to get the job.

I remember doing a medevac in a Bell 47 in Korea at night.  And all that other stuff.

Just because helicopters become faster and more capable doesn't mean they are not going to be tasked to do what they are capable of doing.  In almost 50 years of helicopter flying the only thing I discovered was doing more as tech evolved.  Not necessarily easier or less dangerous.  All helicopter flying can kill ya, just let ur guard down and see what happens.
