While transferring an extremely sick patient and where time was of the essence I almost crossed over a power station while enroute to the receiving hospital. Normally I would have flown a few miles from the station but as the crew were working ferociously on the patient the most direct route was necessary. I have no doubt ATC was aware of my routing due to ADSB etc.

Has anyone ever had a call from the FAA for flying to near a powere station while transfering a patient by HAA?

you can fly over. loitering over a nuke plant may not be such a good idea. there are no regs against any of it.

There is nothing in FAR's that says you cannot overfly power stations.  I believe there are a few around the country but they should be indicated on the chart.  I have flown over Indian Point nuclear plant for years and people ask is that legal, I point out various areas that are restricted. Don't lose any sleep over this and stay safe!

#1 "While transferring an extremely sick patient and where time was of the essence" Why are you giving any concern to the patient? You should never take patient condition into your decisions.

#2 "Normally I would have flown a few miles from the station but as the crew were working ferociously on the patient the most direct route was necessary." Again, Why are you giving any concern to how ferociously the medcrew was working on this patient? If you 'normally' would have flown a few miles from the station, then why did you alter your normality due to patient condition? Asking for an accident there my friend.

#3 Why on earth would the FAA call you about flying over a power station? Nothing illegal about it, and plus you're medevac status.

15 years in EMS and I've landed at a power plant, a power substation, and an oil refinery. Never once did I receive a call from anyone.

When your med-crew are physically trying to keep a patient alive with chest compressions, you don't doddle around. I try to get to the hospital as quickly as possible while flying within the aircraft limits. Now had it been a broken ankle I would have probably avoided the station by a mile.

BNW to DFW?  No problem, we've done it for 20 years.

Okay, let me ask this then. What is the difference between going 3 miles out of the way vs direct? 1 min? you think that extra 1 min saved or killed that patient?

What about when you are rushing to save that 1 min and you forget something on the checklist, or hit lines because you did something different than what you would normally do? You think that patient cared then? Probably not because now they are for sure dead, along with probably some or all of the crew.

Guaranteed that patient was pronounced dead 1 min after your med crew dropped them off. If they somehow, incredibly, survived; I can say with 1000% accuracy it was NOT that extra 1 min you saved that allowed them to survive. However, I also can say with 1000% accuracy you just put everyone on board that helicopter at more risk by taking patient condition into your decision making.

to mention that deviating to the side of a power station may add 1 or 2 seconds to your enroute time.  Worried about the condition of the patient?  That's not your job, and don't let the medical crew control your decisions.  Their input is appreciated and considered, but that's as far as it goes.  Called working together.

And, BTW, you do not work for the medical people, they do not pay your salary and are not at all in line on the operating certificate, they are not the customer.  The customer is the patient and your role in the equation is to fly the crew and patient safely from A to B at your speed and discretion.

Keep your role in the situation clearly defined for everyone's benefit.

There are thousands if not millions of examples of people being detained while police or security sort out if a crime was actually committed. That is the case here. I'm sure he was sent down the road within a couple of hours and nothing on his record.

Ya...  if some slap jack FBO unicom dork demands you land you better! NOT!  Extorted to sign a release waiver in exchange for not suing a hillbilly county sheriff's office over a really thin disturbing the peace arrest? Also, NOT.

As both a pilot and a cop after 9/11 there was specific training for LE and pilots about air operations around infrastructure none of which about this arrest was appropriate.

APOA did not do this pilot anything of real help.
