ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - National Transportation Safety Board investigators say a sightseeing helicopter received “substantial” damage Tuesday morning, after it rolled over during a landing attempt near the Knik Glacier in the mountains outside of Anchorage, leaving two passengers with minor injuries. According to the NTSB’s initial report, the two injured passengers were among the seven aboard Alpha Aviation’s Airbus AS350 helicopter when the aircraft’s landing gear clipped rocks and rolled over. “We received a call from the operator that they had a machine that experienced what’s known as dynamic rollover,” NTSB Alaska Region Chief Clint Johnson said. “It’s basically when one skid ... becomes attached to the ground and it rolls over on its axis.” Mike Neely, Alpha Aviation’s general manager, said the landing near Inner Lake George was unscheduled.

This is why pilots with experience up there are sought after. The learning curve is steep and the autonomy in operations is high.

There is nothing magical about Alaska time. A little more work planning a flight and not much in resources to count on but I had lots more aircraft performance challenge in New Mexico and Arizona then Alaska.
