Reinstate the draft. All individuals 18 through 20 get drafted.   After two years sort out the ones that are worth anything and let the other 99% go.   That way the military filtered out the 1% that's worth anything and maybe they will be worth something 10 years down the road instead of being a TAX LEACH.  

The military in most cases is just glorified welfare for the 99% losers that are there.   

Perfect but the percentage spread is probably more like 20% good and 80% worthless tax leachs.   

ANYONE in the military knows this is the honest truth. They bring the same thug gangster culture into the military, don't think for a second that goes away. Then that same military promotes these people based strictly on skin pigment.

The draft is not the answer.  I enlisted in 1973 and I had draftee's in my basic and AIT units.  They had deferments from college but had graduated and owed Uncle Sam 2 years.  Nothing worse than a group of people who didn't want to be there.  Here is a better answer to boost the military.  Make it worthwhile to be in the military.  It's not for everyone, but make it so desirable that everyone wants to be there.  Increase the pay, revert back to the retirement that I have....50% after 20 years.  Not like todays retirement.  Tweek the medical for retirees to insure that they and their family are covered at 100%.  Make it so tempting for a person to enlist that the military can pick and choose the best applicants.  I know, it's a dream.  And there are those of you out there that would be against such a thing.  That's cool.  You do you boo.  The best years of my life were the 20 years I spent in the Army.  In the Infantry.  And deployed.  My only regreat that I didn't stay for 30.

Same here, but I stayed for 30 and was totally burnt out after 26. Thank you for your sevice, and I hope you enjoyed Fort Benning as much as I did :-)

and that may be an answer for those so interested but the macro POV may not be worthwhile.  I am a military draft and national service advcate.  Until ALL the people in this country have to FACE national obligations we will definitely not act as one nation.  

A highly paid etc. military smacks of not only current necessity but also a mercenary force.  There at least has to be some middle ground betwixt a volunteer force and national obligation.

If necessary I suspect the draft will return.  Price of citizenship.

bring troops home, stop foreign wars for big business. army to repel invasions only. defense budget cut 80%, put war profiteers to work farming or teaching school. america, not amerika. 

Reinstating the draft for this present generation of eligible draftees would be like putting a politician under oath.  Worthless !!  

the sentiment but disagree.  Put a "man" between a rock and a hard place and attitudes change real fast.  Surviving one fire fight usually makes quite a difference.

Yeah, it'll increase training and total cost of the military. The benefit is greater than increasing the size of the military, it will make the citizenry aware of the issues of military service.

The professionals actively serving aren't and never will be of sufficient numbers for any actual war. They are the experienced cadre that will train the citizen soldiers necessary to win that war. There will always be political violence somewhere imn the world that may require the American military in some capacity, and that will provide combat experience for that cadre. You would be surprised at the numbers that prefer combat to stateside Mickey Mouse...
